Advocacy
Advocates educate people about poverty, their rights and help dispel myths and stereotypes surrounding low-income families. We answer calls from members all over the state who are seeking support in the welfare system and provide them with information about their rights. This is a good way to learn about the laws that govern social services while making a direct impact in the empowerment of low-income parents.
All advocates respect the individuality of others. We understand the importance of being validated, believing in the person and not the system. We maintain our information to be confidential and insure the rights of others are protected. In turn, those we help will continue the same advocacy to create a strong safety net for themselves and others.
Involved Advocates:
- Assist others in looking up Washington Administration Codes (WACs) pertaining to public assistance programs.
- Document information/concerns people have about public assistance and/or caseworkers.
- Inform people of their right to a Fair Hearing when one feels they have been treated unfairly.
- Become a silent witness, when needed, to gain knowledge of the welfare system and to find new ways of making sure all are respected when dealing with DSHS.
- Provide referrals to other community resources.
